Itamar Shimshony

Artist Statement

Itamar Shimshony (b.1980), lives and creates in Israel. Shimshony holds a B.F.A and a M.F.A from the Bezalel Academy for Art and Design. Shimshony is a versatile artist working mainly in the medium of video art and sculpting. His recent body of work examines the influence of life and technology on art using a critique approach saturated with humor and irony.

Two of his most dominant works are: Stony 1.0 and Masterchat.
Stony 1.0 is a robot responsible for taking care of a tombstone; cleaning, leaving flowers and stones as the Jewish custom requires. The project presents philosophical questions- where will technology lead humanity and will there come a day where it will replace humans?
In Masterchat, Shimshony invited 4 leading Israeli artists to participate in a series of conversations regarding the medium of painting, art and life itself. The video work was conducted and edited as if it were a realty show and is a humorous yet poignant comment regarding the current art arena.

Shimshony has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in Israel and abroad among which: “Masterchat”, Artists' Cube Studio Jerusalem, “Toys R Art Factory”, The Mana Contemporary, New York, “Stony 1.0” , Ars Electronica Center, Austria and the ZKM Center in Germany. His works are part of esteemed private collection in Israel and abroad among which the Wingate Family collection. In addition, Shimshony teaches at the Bezalel Academy at the department of Screen Based Art as well as at the department of Industrial Design.
